Picture-Heavy For No Reason

Photoshop with AI? No. Gross.

But now a little bit about Santa Lucia Day. L's school observes Santa Lucia Day which apparently has roots in Italy? But is observed in Sweden and appears by all rights to be pagan as hell. Which, of course, is lovely!

What you do is buy saffron (very expensive) and grind it with mortar and pestle. You combine it with the dough which, in our case, was vegan and gluten-free and the kids make it into lussekatter:

Evidently this is Swedish for cat's eyes, but it sounds more like light-cat to me (lusse? Katter?) so feel free to think that too. The children dress in white and wear crowns of gold or silver and red sashes which are meant to represent death although I'm not sure the kindergartners really get into that.

They sing a little song and evidently there are several translations but the point of all of them is that it is dark and and the sun has forgot the earth but here comes Santa Lucia bringing the light so hang in there, baby!

At this school you only get to do it in kindergarten so I made a point of going because I just fucking love stuff like this!

The kindergartners take the buns and sing the song and walk through all the "upper" classes. If you're getting "visited by Santa Lucia", the thing is you have to pretend to be asleep. So here we are creeping through classrooms strewn with sleeping (older) children and adults, leaving buns beside them. At first I couldn't figure out why I felt so unsettled and then I remembered the music video for "Guitar Hero" by Amanda Palmer.

Give it a watch if you like! Read A Mother's Reckoning while you're at it! Just be sure to have taken a few weeks worth of SSRIs first.

Okay. I'm going to go try to go skiing and then do some yuletide-type-stuff. Take care. And hey - if you need to sigh loudly like your dad try doing it extra-loud into a pillow to exorcise the krampus demons. At least once! What could it hurt?
